Destinations Planner: Angels Camp
by Keith Walsh
Getting There
WorldMark Angels Camp is 130 miles east of San Francisco. The
closest airport is Sacramento International, which is about
two and a half hours away. We stayed in a two-bedroom unit;
both bedrooms were on the ground
floor. The three-bedroom unit above us had a master bedroom
upstairs. One-bedroom units are also available and all units
include a Murphy bed.
Call your vacation planner at 1-800-457-0103 for reservations.
What to Do
WorldMark Angels Camp is on the 10th fairway of the championship
Robert Trent Jones, Jr. 18-hole
Greenhorn Creek Golf Course.
Tee times can be arranged at your resort’s front desk.
The impressive Calaveras Big Trees State Park is
where you’ll get to stare up the trunks of the Giant Sequoias. It’s
a bit of a drive past Murphys on Route 4, but you’ll find that it
lives up to its name.
Columbia State Historical Park claims to be California’s
best-preserved gold rush town. The old downtown is restored to rustic perfection
and you can actually participate in this historical re-creation by panning
for gold.
Indulge the amateur spelunker in yourself by touring the caverns in the
area. Mercer Caverns are open to the public daily.
Where to Eat
Fine dining is available very close to home at
Camps,
which is in the golf course clubhouse. It’s open Wednesday through
Sunday for lunch and dinner. In downtown Angels Camp, the restaurant
people rave about is
Crusco’s. This is old-world
Italian eating at its best. In Murphys, our favorites were
Firewood—brick-oven pizza and gourmet burritos—for
lunch and
Grounds—American cuisine with a French
influence —for dinner.
